The endocrine system plays an important role in the regulation of body functions. The organs of this system - the endocrine glands - secrete special substances that have a significant and specialized effect on the metabolism, structure and function of organs and tissues. Endocrine glands differ from other glands that have excretory ducts (exocrine glands) in that they secrete the substances they produce directly into the blood.
